One of the problems with boatbuilding in the remoter part of Britain is the distance we are from any related boaty activity. This has meant that for significant parts of the year I decamp along with the boat/s of the moment and head south to mingle with like minded souls. This leaves my cottage empty for unacceptable periods – from time to time good friends have accepted the opportunity to occupy the place in my absence and explore this glorious part of the world. I have long thought that it would be great if more people could enjoy recuperative breaks up here – one of the difficulties is that really good accommodation gets known by word of mouth and is booked up well ahead. I can reveal that a new venture has just started, run by good friends Di & Rick , offering great self catering homes – if you are quick you can get your booking in and have your break in paradise this year. The homes they are managing are in gorgeous locations, well away from the rat race, yet with all necessary conveniences. One of the few beneficial side effects of the Big Bank Foulup is to make holidaying in Scotland a more attractive proposition, apparently bookings are well up on previous years already. The long standing appreciation that our European partners have for Wester Ross and Sutherland appears to have been reinforced by the recent adjustment to the exchange rate and we will no doubt see even more foreign number plates on our roads this year.

Beautiful job on “Scotch Mist”.
A NA has almost completed a clinker 20′ lugger plan-set for me. I would like to utilize your technique of temporary ribbands, continuing them to the stem. What I’m wandering now is how to connect the ribbands behind the inner-stem, the dimensions of ribbands, & if it would be possible to use Iain’s plywood clamps with a wedges placed at top & bottom?
Thanks very much for your time & for any advice offered.
Great place NW Highlands.
Best regards,
John
